What is Frome Solar Streets?
Frome was the first town in the Solar Streets scheme in 2019 and was very successful with over 70 installations. Now after adding 17 new schemes to the programme, Solar Streets is back, offering a great discounted deal, for householders who live in Frome, to have Solar PV panels installed.
Solar Streets is a way of getting solar panels for your house or business at discounted prices. You can save money on your electricity bills, help the fight against climate change, and support your local community, as for each completed installation a donation is given to Frome Renewable Energy Cooperative (FRECo)’s Community Energy Fund.
If you know you want panels now and would like us to do a free desktop survey to see if your roof is suitable then email us today at Info@IDDEA.co.uk with your name, full address with postcode, tell us you’re in Frome Solar Streets and we’ll check it out for you. We do not need to visit your property to do a desktop survey.
If you have any questions to do with Solar Streets or anything you’ve seen on this page then email us at Info@SolarStreets.co.uk and we’ll get back to you.
Your solar panels will be installed by IDDEA Ltd. Established in 2007, IDDEA have installed over 1,000 solar projects across the South and are committed to supporting communities to take action to address the Climate Emergency. They have Solar Streets projects in neighbouring areas including Wells, Brue Valley and Somerton, as well as further afield in Henley-on-Thames, Thame, Wallingford, St Albans, and others.
Let’s make Frome Solar Streets an effective tool in the effort to tackle the climate emergency and create a greener and more resilient Frome.
A Message from your Green Advocates
“The cost of solar panels has halved over the last decade, and with this fantastic offer our hope is that even more households in Frome will be able to save money on their bills, while helping to do our part in addressing climate change by becoming a carbon neutral town by 2030.”

What is available in the Scheme?
The Standard Offering is a 3.6 kWp system including installation and is approx £4,100. However, you may need a smaller or larger system, and these are offered with the same percentage discount as the Standard Offering. You may also wish to take advantage of optional extras (see below).
The Technical Survey will also highlight any potential issues we need to take into consideration, like a problem roof or difficult access to your property, and these may change the price of the installation. However, all of these options will be explained to you after the Technical Survey when we know more about your property and your electricity useage. You will be given a quotation for whatever system you think is right for you, and everything will be priced clearly with no hard sell.
Solar PV Panels
The standard offering now features black 360 Wp panels from Longi.
A standard 3.6 kWp, 10 panel system saves approx 1T of carbon dioxide per year (Jan2020) according to the Energy Saving Trust (energysavingtrust.org.uk). If you imagine a cube 8.2 m (27 ft) filled with carbon dioxide, then that’s the amount of carbon saved in 1T.
The prices for panels have just increased but the power has increased from 340 Wp to 360 Wp per panel, and so you may be able to get a reasonable system on smaller roofs. The Solar Street prices for full installation are now:
3.6 kWp system approx £4,100 and
4.32 kWp system approx £4,300
The Community Fund
Frome Community Fund is a new fund to be established for the benefit of the Community entirely as a result of the Solar Streets Project
IDDEA add £50 per residential installation and £100 for a commercial installation into the Frome Community Fund
Frome Community Fund will be spent on green projects to benefit Frome
If you are worried about losing power from your panels because of shading issues, or a single panel failing and knocking out the others, then you can upgrade your system to an optimised system. This uses a different inverter which controls optimisers on each panel so that if one panel has a problem, the inverter takes it out of the system so it doesn’t affect the rest of the panels and they will go on producing electricity as normal. When you ask IDDEA for a quote be sure to tell them you want an optimised system. This will add approximately £990 onto the cost of your normal system whatever size system you go for, but it will be itemised in the quote so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
Battery Storage Systems
If you are going to need to use your Solar PV output in the evening then you will need a battery to store the energy during the day for use later. A 5kW Givenergy battery is £3,055.50 fitted when you have it installed with the panels.
You can have a battery fitted later if you want but it will be more expensive as the VAT changes. The price installed with the panels only has 5% VAT on it, but the price installed later has 20% VAT on it.
Use this neat little add-on device, which attaches to your water tank, to heat your water with your solar energy. The iBoost diverts any excess solar power to your tank to heat your water (rather than using your gas or oil boiler to do this). This generally saves you more money than selling your excess back to the grid at 5p per unit. Please note: you need a water tank with a heating element, this doesn’t work on combi-boilers. An iBoost is £315 when fitted with your panels.
Electric Vehicle Charging Points
We can easily put in a charging point for your electric vehicle at the same time as installing your panels. IDDEA currently install a one-way charger.
If your electric car is sat at home during the day (as many are at the moment) then you can use your panels to charge it. Many people think about using their car battery as battery storage to use later, but you can only do this if you have a two-way charger so you can take the power out of the battery and back to the grid when you need to. IDDEA do not currently install a two-way charger, you would need to get this elsewhere.
You must decide how to fund the panels yourself – there are the usual funding avenues for you to explore, as well as re-mortgaging and low interest loans, but you must do your own due diligence on what any of these financial deals entail and choose accordingly. Solar Streets cannot give you any financial advice. IDDEA accept Debit and Credit Cards.
However as you are in the South West of England, then you have another option to consider – Lendology work with local Councils to provide loans to householders.
South West of England
If you need a loan to finance your panels then Lendology will offer you advice and a quotation if your project matches their lending criteria. https://www.lendology.org.uk/
“Lendology CIC is a unique lender, working with homeowners to fund home improvements. Based on the outskirts of Taunton, our team works across the South West providing a variety of loan schemes in partnership with local district councils. As a not-for-profit organisation, using the Council partner funding, we are able to provide homeowners access to financial support to help with the cost of repairs.”
Please note: Lendology has no connection with Solar Streets, The Green Group (UK) Ltd or IDDEA Ltd. We are not offering financial advice – if you choose to speak to Lendology about a loan then that is your own choice and they will explain all the financial consequences to you.
For all the options below please remember to let us know you are part of Frome Solar Streets so we can apply your discount.
Also, you may be eligible for a grant of up to £5,000 towards your Business Project from Low Carbon Workspaces – they are completely independent of Solar Streets – check them out here: www.lowcarbonworkspaces.co.uk
For businesses who don’t have enough roof space or just want extra solar electricity, you can add solar canopies to your car park space – you can still use it as a car park but the panels sit on a canopy above the cars on a secure steel structure – ask us at Info@IDDEA.co.uk
If you use a lot of electricity in your business and have a large roof on your workspace then ask us about a commercial installation and see how you can save on your electricity bill – ask us at Info@IDDEA.co.uk
If your business doesn’t have the funds to hand for the installation but you still want to use Green Electricity then ask us about a Power Purchase Agreement where you do not have any upfront cost but you can still save money on the per unit rate you pay for your electricity – please note, a PPA usually runs for 10 to 25 years so it is not a short-term option, but can be a great option if you own your building or have a very long lease – ask us at Info@IDDEA.co.uk
The Power Purchase Agreement (explained above), is a particularly good option for SCHOOLS and COLLEGES that have the roof space and the electricity demand but don’t have the immediate funds, because you will usually either own the building or be staying in the same building for a long time. All the upfront costs of installing and maintaining the panels are paid for – you can then save money on your electricity bills by paying a lower per unit rate for your electricity secure in the knowledge that you are also reducing your carbon footprint. This is a great teaching point for your students also.

How Do I Get the Deal?
Contact IDDEA directly through Info@IDDEA.co.uk and tell them you are part of Frome Solar Streets. Provide your name, phone number and address with postcode.
They will conduct a desktop survey of your property making sure it is suitable for solar panels – this is done across the internet using Google Earth.
They would normally then come and see you for a physical survey, but these are not normal times, and so the next step is to gather more information about your property by talking to you and emailing.
They will produce a free quotation. If you want any added extras they will explain them all to you clearly and with transparant prices – there will be no hard sell ever.
When you accept the quotation in principal, IDDEA will come out and do a technical survey of your property to make sure that the quotation is correct. If everything is OK they will resubmit the quotation to you and if you want to go ahead then a 25% deposit is taken. Please be assured that IDDEA are members of HIES, which offers consumers protection against unforseen issues. If anything should happen to IDDEA and they could not continue your installation, then HIES will make sure you get your money back. https://www.hiesscheme.org.uk/
A date will be set for the installation and just before installation takes place then an extra 35% is payable.
When the installation is complete and successfully signed off you pay the extra 40%.
Even during lockdown solar panels can be installed as they are classed as “permitted construction”.
If you want any added extras they will be explained to you clearly and with transparent prices – there will be no hard sell ever.
